Placenta Encapsulation: Our Process

Placenta encapsulation is the process of dehydrating the placenta and placing the powdered placenta into capsules. The capsules are then consumed by the mother to enhance the postpartum experience. Placing the placenta in capsules makes ingestion easier for the consumer as there is no mess and no taste. Placenta tinctures can be used by both mom and baby.

Getting Your Placenta

Immediately following the birth of your baby the placenta is delivered. This is why it's commonly referred to as "the after birth". Medical staff – usually a nurse, technician or birth assistant – will put your placenta into a plastic bag or a disposable plastic container. Once the container is sealed place the placenta in a cooler with ice to keep it cold. The placenta needs to stay on ice until it can be refrigerated.

You can either keep your cooler at your birth location with you until you go home or send it home with your partner, a friend or family member. Your placenta will never leave the control of you or someone you deeply trust, ensuring 100% confidence that it is, indeed, yours and has been properly stored and handled.

You will schedule your appointment for encapsulation at your convenience through our website. This can be as soon as the day you arrive home so that you can begin taking your capsules within the first week postpartum or you can wait until you are a bit more settled in at home.

And yes, we’ll do it in your kitchen.

We provide placenta services in your home. This way you can rest assured knowing the placenta products you receive are your own and there is no risk of cross contamination. During the visits you can also observe our process and witness the care we put into preparing your placenta products. We provide all necessary equipment.

The first appointment will take 2 hours to prep the placenta and begin dehydration.

How does it smell?

A common concern families have is the idea of a "placenta odor" during the process. When steaming the placenta (if needed) for a short time, there can be a light earthy smell. It's similar to the aroma produced when cooking. Once steaming is complete there is no additional odor for the duration of the process. If desired, the placenta can be steamed with ingredients of the client's choice such as lemon, ginger, or cayenne. The placenta will then be placed in a dehydrator and left overnight.

The next day we will return to complete the process of grinding the placenta into powder, placing it into capsules and creating your tincture. We infuse your placenta in 100 proof vodka so that you and baby can reap the benefits for years to come. Upon completion, the client will be informed of the number of capsules produced from the placenta. A placenta generally yields 100-200 capsules and a 2ml tincture.  We will also provide instructions are how to use your placenta products. Tinctures can be used to ease infant teething, balance hormones during menstruation as well as menopause for mom. Until the very last drop, your placenta tincture can provide the extra boost you need.

The second day the appointment will take 1-2 hours dependent upon any additional postpartum needs you may have.

While our primary focus is preparing your placenta this time can also double as a way to get postpartum support from a professional. Feel free to ask questions regarding your birth, recovery, breastfeeding or baby while we are present.

No worries about mess. We leave your kitchen sparkling clean!
